Baltimore - "Charm City"

Baltimore Real Estate

Located in the center of the state, the city of Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland. It has shifted from a manufacturing center to a leader in the health industry, with Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins University calling Baltimore real estate home. One visit to Baltimore real estate and you will see why it has earned the nickname "Charm City".  The first-class restaurants, gorgeous architecture and frenetic nightlife all point to a cool and interesting time for visitors and residents alike.

History of Baltimore
While the Port of Baltimore was reated in 1706 for use in tobacco trading, the town itself wasn't founded until 1729. It quickly became the main granary for Caribbean sugar producers, causing the Baltimore real estate to expand and grow throughout the 18th century.  Baltimore helped play a key role in the American Revolution, fighting British taxes by agreeing not to trade with British companies. It was while watching American soldiers successfully defend the harbor against a British invasion that Francis Scott Key got the inspiration for "The Star Spangled Banner".

After the conclusion of the War of 1812, the city of Baltimore experienced a population boom. The construction of roads and train routes through the city made it a popular and convenient transportation center for all the major manufacturing and shipping companies in the area.

The Great Baltimore Fire of 1904 destroyed virtually all of the town in just over a day. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, Baltimore real estate had been rebuilt by 1906. The new city absorbed many of the suburbs in the counties surrounding it, creating an even larger city that continued to grow in area until 1918.

Unfortunately, by the 1970s, Baltimore's Inner Harbor area of downtown had been sadly neglected and was in desperate need of care and attention. A concerted effort to rebuild the dilapidated downtown by the end of the 1970s resulted in construction of the Baltimore Convention Center, Harborplace, National Aquarium in Baltimore and the Baltimore Museum of Industry between 1979 and 1981.  The Baltimore Orioles moved their baseball team to the downtown area in 1992 and the Baltimore Ravens followed suit in 1998.

Baltimore's School System
Baltimore has an extensive educational system. Baltimore City Public Schools oversees the public education of students living in Baltimore real estate. There are 235 elementary, 93 middle and 77 high schools in Baltimore's public school system. There are 12 charter schools operating in the city and 612 private schools available as an alternative to public education.
